Parameterization of 3D Brain Structures for Statistical Shape Analysis

چکیده
Statistical Shape Analysis (SSA) is a powerful tool for noninvasive studies of pathophysiology and diagnosis of brain diseases. It also provides a shape constraint for the segmentation of brain structures. There are two key problems in SSA: the representation of shapes and their alignments. The widely used parameterized representations are obtained by preserving angles or areas and the alignments of shapes are achieved by rotating parameter net. However, representations preserving angles or areas do not really guarantee the anatomical correspondence of brain structures. In this paper, we incorporate shape-based landmarks into parameterization of banana-like 3D brain structures to address this problem. Firstly, we get the triangulated surface of the object and extract two landmarks from the mesh, i.e. the ends of the banana-like object. Then the surface is parameterized by creating a continuous and bijective mapping from the surface to a spherical surface based on a heat conduction model. The correspondence of shapes is achieved by mapping the two landmarks to the north and south poles of the sphere and using an extracted origin orientation to select the dateline during parameterization. We apply our approach to the parameterization of lateral ventricle and a multiresolution shape representation is obtained by using the Discrete Fourier Transform.

3D Surface Parameterization Using Manifold Learning for Medial Shape Representation
The choice of 3D shape representation for anatomical structures determines the effectiveness with which segmentation, visualization, deformation, and shape statistics are performed. Medial axis-based shape representations have attracted considerable attention due to their inherent ability to encode information about the natural geometry of parts of the anatomy. In this paper, we propose a novel...

متن کاملA Volumetric Conformal Mapping Approach for Clustering White Matter Fibers in the Brain
The human brain may be considered as a genus-0 shape, topologically equivalent to a sphere. Various methods have been used in the past to transform the brain surface to that of a sphere using harmonic energy minimization methods used for cortical surface matching. However, very few methods have studied volumetric parameterization of the brain using a spherical embedding. Volumetric parameteriza...

Shape analysis of curves and surfaces is a very important tool in many applications ranging from computer vision to bioinformatics and medical imaging. There are many difficulties when analyzing shapes of parameterized curves and surfaces. Firstly, it is important to develop representations and metrics such that the analysis is invariant to parameterization in addition to the standard transform...

Martin Andreas Styner: Medial Shape Description of Variable Biological Objects. (Under the direction of Guido Gerig.) This dissertation describes a novel shape description scheme that incorporates variability of an object population into the generation of a characteristic 3D shape model. Knowledge about the biological variability of anatomical objects is essential for statistical shape analysis...
